 Varieties of insects

This is a beautiful essay on the life and habits of the insects. God has created countless varieties of insects. Our earth so teems with a complex little creatures that no one can count them. Nearly seven hundred and fifty thousand species have been classified. About four thousand new varieties are found every year. It have been estimated that the scientists may discover millions more in future.

The insects have countless shapes and habits. They can cope with life under almost any circumstances. There is a beetle that thrives on red pepper. There are many tiny insects that live on the tongues of the horse flies.

There are other insects which have neither mouths nor stomachs and they never eat at all.nWe also find that the insects are the wonderful creature of God. We are impressed by their delicate shapes and figures. We are greatly delighted to see the enchanting movements of the giant moths that beat their beautifully patterned wings at our windows in summer. We cannot ignore the beauty of the butterflies, grasshoppers and moths. We do not know much about the habits and living conditions of these insects. However, we are pleased to see the beauty of their shapes and figure.

Common points among insects

In this essay,  the writer points out that insects have many common things to share:

1.    Boneless:

An insect has no bones. It wears its skeleton externally. It is built inside out and outside down. Its heart is on top near its back. Its legs are tube shaped. The legs are the greatest sporting device of an insect. A tiny insect indeed is very strong due to its strong supporting legs.

2.  Flying power :

The insects have the great capacity to fly. They fly over long distances regularly. For example, Monarch butterflies make flights of three thousand miles and more. They are very tiny creatures but they do this difficult task with pleasure. Fainted Lady butterflies are found to make a journey from North Africa to Iceland, in the face of rains and stones. They often reach their destination with their wings broken on the way.

3.  Outside skeleton :

The insects have common outside skeleton. The growing skeletons must periodically lose their hair and feathers. The horny casing splits and the insect creeps out in such a soft skin that it is boneless. The boneless insects swallows air or water. It grows into new size gradually.

4.  The circulation of  blood :

The insect blood is not confined by any system of veins. Blood circulates in the body of an insect through a single artery. This single artery runs through the chest and the blood surges through the whole body. The blood is forced to the far tips of the thread-fine extremities by little helping hearts. A cockroach has one in its head. Water insects have booster heart to ensure perfect circulation in their legs.

5.  Respiratory system :

The respiratory system of an insect is quite easy and wonderful. It has no lungs. It does not breathe by mouth and nostrils. There are very small holes along its sides connected with hundreds of airlines. It gets its oxygen through these holes.  When an insect is resting, it need relatively little oxygen. In flight, it must breathe excessively.

6. Wings of an insect :

The wings of an insect are very powerful. They have great striking power. For example, a Dragon Fly has very thin wings, but it can fly at a speed of forty miles an hour. A mosquito can fly at ease with sucked  blood twice its own weight. It beats its wings more than three hundred  times a second. A very small insect Midge beats its wings more than three hundred times a second.

7.  Sensory power :

The insects have wonderful sensory power. They listen to life with two kinds of ears; delicate hairs sensitive to sound waves or tympanic membrane like our eardrums. The ears of insects are distributed on the different parts of the body. Crickets have ears on their knees. Cicadas have ears in their abdomens. A water beetle hears with its chest.

8. Visionary power:

Insects see by small eyes called ocelli on top of their heads, by great compound eyes, at the sides and by kind of all over ” invisible eye ”  or light sense. With its eyes completely covered a light-loving insect still moves towards brightness and a dark-loving one seeks the Shadows. It literally sees through its skin. With its compound eyes, the insect sees a world of extraordinary colors. The eyes of a dragonfly can see twenty five thousand scenes at a time.

9. Taste organs :

Sn insect has its taste organs in its mouth but it can also taste by other parts of the body. Butterflies and bees can taste not only with their mouth but also with their feet.

Something strange about insects

” The Marvel of an insect” is a great essay on the power and achievements of insects. The insects are the great creation of God. God has granted wonderful power of hearing, seeing and touching. Some of the strange power of insects have been discussed below.

There is a beetle that thrives in red pepper. There are some others that live on the tongue of horse-flies. There are others which do not have stomach and never eat at all. A scarab bottle can fly easily even with 850 times weight kept on it. Monarch butterflies make a migratory journey of up to three thousand miles or more. Painted lady butterflies go from North to Iceland inspite of the horrible wind storms on the way.

Water insects have booster-hearts to give extra to their legs and cockroaches have booster hearts in their feelers. A midge’s wings can beat more than a thousand times a second and a mosquito can beat its wings more than three hundred times a second. Some of the insects ( likebles and butterflies ) can withhold such tough circumstances which are enough to kill even the toughest elephant.

Bush crickets can hear upto 45000 vibrations per second, whereas we can listen up to 20000 vibrations per second.

Butterflies  can taste 1: 30000 solution of sugar and water whereas a man can also taste upto 1: 200 solutions.

Some male moths can smell female moths up a distance of 15 kilometers downward. Beetle can find out hidden meat even if all their sense organs are temporarily paralyzed.

These are some of the wonderful aspects of the insects discussed in the essay ” The Marvel of an Insect”.
